One of my favorite female rappers Rye Rye (understand why after you see “Shake It To The Ground” that she made at age 16. What are you waiting for?!) has unveiled her 2nd single “Never Be Mine,” that features a sample from the 2005 Robyn song “Be Mine!” as the chorus. Rye Rye’s team seem to be focusing on having a very easy radio song; in a similar vain to Nicki Minaj‘s “Your Love” single. Yet Rye Rye (who’s signed under M.I.A.‘s N.E.E.T. label) seems to be following in a similar path as top female rapper Nicki Minaj, check what we can infer from the music.
The track sees an easy 808 beat that Rye Rye’s signature rap style fits smoothly over before quickly hitting the catchy chorus. Rather than trying to sing an (inevitable) catchy chorus that comes with a song like this, Rye takes an interesting route for the chorus by messing with the original “Be Mine!” track to make a fresh-sounding chorus for the single. Props to Rye Rye for not sampling one of Robyn’s recent singles because that would come off as a total rip-off as it seems like many artists are trying to bite the success that Robyn found with her melancholy electropop. Granted, I really didn’t like Robyn before her recent Body Talk releases from the past year and was not impressed with her early 2000 material, but I do like this.
I could see this song doing well on the rap charts for Rye Rye. The (awesome) lead single “Sunshine” featuring M.I.A. did not chart anywhere, so it seems the labels (she is also under Interscope) are switching up their tune after the interesting/artistic single didn’t catch on.
“Sunshine” was the perfect culmination of Rye Rye & M.I.A.’s work together, but it didn’t work. So now they move onto a mid-tempo rap track with a catchy chorus. I see a lot of similarities to how Nicki Minaj was marketed. After the artistic representation of Nicki “Massive Attack” featuring Sean Garrett flopped, they went with the very safe single “Your Love” which ALSO featured a sample from Annie Lennox! How weird that Rye Rye’s new single is a mid-tempo with a sample! Hmm.
Well whatever works because honestly Rye Rye is a great talent and I’ve been waiting for her debut album for too long now. I hope this becomes a hit for her sake as she is the possibly the only female rap artist that can compete with Minaj so it could lead to some interesting comparisons as Lil’ Kim tries to compete with her but is just not bringing it. Rye Rye in 2011!!
