After her extremely safe “Get Over U” single that ended up going nowhere, Neon Hitch has come back with a new angle on “Silly Girl.” This electro-raggae-gypsy banger (for lack of a better term) was produced by Benny Blanco and Switch and the two up & coming producers should turn some heads with this track. The song sees Neon Hitch going into a completely different direction of her first single, and it’s an extreme atypical treat. You gotta hear it! Also, find some other great music inside I think the song draws influence from.
First off, “Silly Girl” starts off with the unusual but awesome lyrics:
‘Cause I’m feeling like a quiji board, move my body back and forth.
in some altered alien baby singing voice that is constantly being altered and mashed up throughout the verse before getting back to catchy “Runnin’ runnin’” of the chorus.
The second chorus continues on with more mashing and different vocal styles that seems to combine the verses of Robyn’s “Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do” and the bridge of Sky Ferreira’s “Haters Anonymous” to the extreme measures. Not to say this song is a rip off, it’s taken these electronic/pop elements and taken them to a new level making the song extremely unique and fresh.
For new artists, I’m under the impression that you’re only going to get noticed if you do something different. Established artists are most likely going to need to do what’s expected of them to continue their already established fanbases (look at Lady GaGa, Rihanna…) but new artists who
were forced take a safe route, like with Sky Ferreira’s “Obsession” or even Neon Hitch’s first (now buzz) single “Get Over U,” it doesn’t catch people’s eyes enough—so go with something like “Silly Girl” to get people’s attention.
I think “Silly Girl” is a great move for her. Her label needs to decide if they’re going to market her to the pop crowds or to the indie kids so that one side can claim her. If not, she probably won’t be picked up by either and this song will sit in limbo—which it shouldn’t! It’s really good!
