Well, she surprised me. Everyone’s favorite avant garde artist Lady GaGa has actually surprised the masses by revealing an extremely kitchy and unpretentious album cover for her upcoming third album Born This Way. The cover sees GaGa take the idea of a cheesy 80s metal rock album cover to the extreme with the inclusion of a ridiculous concept photo and lame font for the title–all of it of course being very metallic. Does it work? Get mythoughts below.
While I’m all for not taking things too seriously and having fun with album covers, I don’t think Lady GaGa is at all in a position to do that with her new album. Constantly, this album has been hyped up by her team and friends saying it is “massive” and “life changing” and that it’s the “best record of the decade.” Why not have a “massive” album cover too?
Additionally, just seen at the more “serious” (as her fans would call it) nature of the material with “Born This Way,” literally becoming the new anthem for equal rights and then 2nd single “Judas” bringing a religious tone to GaGa’s work…it seems like GaGa’s taking her work very seriously. So why the campy album cover?
Perhaps its to be ironic? Perhaps GaGa’s pulling a fast one on us, but if she was going full force with this idea I would have thought both the “Born This Way” and “Judas” single covers would follow a similar route…but they didn’t and are very in line with her other single covers; everything taken very seriously and visually interesting.
So basically, it works for what it is, but it doesn’t work for what Team GaGa has been making this record out to be and what we know about it so far.
In other, BTW news…a new song title looks to be confirmed called “Unicorn Highway (Road To Love)” after The Ga tweeted these words in captial letters then giving some lyrics:
Get your hot rods ready to rumble, cause’ were gonna fall in love tonight.
Get your hot rods ready to rumble, cause’ we’re gonna drink until we die.
I don’t get the lyrics but the title “Unicorn Highway” is amazing! Then again, I just love unicorns and am infamously known in my family for being the brother to cry when my dad sang us the old lullaby about how the unicorns got washed away in Noah’s Ark because they were playing…….I’m not going to cry again…
The regular edition of Born This Way will have 14 songs (different from the 20 GaGa originally announced at a concert) and the deluxe will have 17 and 5 remixes.
So check out the two album covers below (the deluxe isn’t very different but is more visually appealing) and let me know your thoughts!
