Robyn‘s Body Talk era isn’t over yet! The singer, who has embarked on one of the most interesting album releases I’ve seen, just announced her new single “Call Your Girlfriend.” Robyn’s Body Talk album is so good and cohesive that I just end up listening to whole thing through and except for a few songs I generally can’t pick them out. Yet once I heard the annoucement, I listened to the song and instantly understood not only how good it was but why its a single as well.
“Call Your Girlfriend” plays off the same sad but extremely relatable pop that has been working wonders for her–the same winning formula that gave her a Grammy nomination for former single “Dancing On My Own” (also great).
The pulsating track embellished with waves of synthesizers has some of Robyn’s best vocals on the album where I find her voice actually pretty–its not that I think Robyn has a bad voice, its just unique and I wouldn’t usually call it ‘pretty.’
Robyn’s Body Talk album ended up on several Best Albums of 2010 lists this year and led to several tours, including one with Kelis, despite debuting at #142 on The Billboard 200. Although it should be noted that the second EP from the project, Body Talk Pt. 2, debuted at #41 making it Robyn’s best album position to date. I think I’ll do an in-depth post one day about Body Talk, its atypical release, and what has happened because of it. Yet in the meantime, take a listen to “Call Your Girlfriend.”
