Two of the biggest superstars in the music industry have been tapped by The Grammy Awards to perform at the 2011 ceremony. Both Lady GaGa and Eminem have been confirmed through various sources to be performing at the music’s biggest night.
Eminem leads the nominations earning 10 from his latest #1 album Recovery as well from his two #1 singles “Not Afraid” and “Love The Way You Lie” featuring Rihanna. Em actually performed at last year’s Grammy Awards as a featured artist for Drake’s performance of “Drop The World” with Lil Wayne. While he was quite unremarkable for that performance, one can’t forget his famous 2002 performance where he performed “Stan” featuring Elton John on Dido’s vocals putting a hush to his supposed homophobia. Will we end up getting a similar show stopping performance? Eminem really doesn’t have any big controversy at the moment, so there’s nothing to redeem himself with necessarily. Will probably just end up being a Not Afraid/Love The Way You Lie medley bringing out Rihanna in the end…yawn.
Lady GaGa is nominated for 6 awards for the night and like Em, also performed (actually opened with Elton John…crazy similarities!) in 2010. While they probably won’t give her the opening spot, it’ll be interesting to see what she ends up performing. She really is one of the best award show performers so I’m sure she’ll bring something everyone will end up talking about the next day–especially because she’s been out of the limelight touring and finishing up her album. Do you think she’ll perform new material? She’s already announced she’ll release her new single of the day of The Grammys–perhaps that means she’ll perform it there? We’ll have to see as the details are still very thin at this point.
Pitchfork is also confirming that Arcade Fire (who also scored a #1 album last year) will perform at The Grammys as well! This will be the first time the indie band will be on The Grammys stage–exciting!
The Grammys’ Twitter account also wrote earlier today: “Something you’ve been asking about is true. Official news and more info in 12 hours.” They’ve confirmed Em & Arcade Fire through retweets, but this could mean several things. Either Lady GaGa’s “little monsters” have been bugging them or Britney Spears’ devotees have been pressuring them. I can’t think of any other 2 artists who would push news like that this much. I’m still skeptical if they’d let Britney perform, but we’ll have to see. The Grammys have been pushing for ratings lately (which is why they let Beyonce break the record for award wins last year…oh jeeze) so they may do so. Or they may just be holding off on confirming GaGa until now since only her choreographer has done so thus far. We’ll have to see, only a few hours away!
The entire Grammy performers list will be announced Thursday but here’s your early sneak peak at them! Check back later for an entire list and thoughts on the performers.
