After a huge introduction to the music industry with “Put Your Records On,” Corinne Bailey Rae struggled to find equal success with her second album The Sea, which still managed to debut in the Top 10 in the US & UK despite no charting singles. Well, the talented songstress (who’s 31 now…who knew?! I thought she was really young…) is coming out with a new EP of covers called The Love EP (you can check out the cover art to the left).
The EP will see Corinne tackling the likes of Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Sly Stone, as well as what I’m seeing being reported to be the first single as a cover of Bob Marley’s “Is This Love.” Well, as if that wasn’t ambitious enough, Corinne added Prince to mix as well taking herself completely out of her blues/singer-songwriter world and straight into the 80’s with a cover of “I Wanna Be Your Lover.”
The track’s production is a little updated, but if anything actually sounds a little more 80’s than the original–I don’t know how that’s possible either, maybe she just played off of the synth sound that the era is so famous for. Regardless, the production is amazing!
Corrine is also pretty impressive too, totally going outside her comfort zone with this song. While I’m still not 100% convinced on her taking on the song, I’ve still listened to this song on repeat for awhile now and I’m loving what she did anyway. Her harmonies are wonderful and really bring the track to the next level. I love her crooning, almost moaning, vocal approach to this song and is extremely refreshing to hear. I would LOVE to see her perform this since I think it’d not only be great to see her performing it, but it’d just be a really fun performance overall.
If all the material is as strong as “I Wanna Be Your Lover” (which there’s a great possibility for, look at who she’s planning to cover) this upcoming EP (scheduled for release on Valentines Day) may end up being a must have. Can’t wait to hear what’s next! Take a listen below:
