BILLBOARD REVEALS TOP 10 BIGGEST SELLING ALBUMS & SINGLES OF 2010

Billboard has revealed the official totals of the biggest albums and singles of the past year in the US with Eminem and Katy Perry leading the album and single packs respectively. Both artists had huge years, but what’s interesting to note is that Eminem finds himself at the top of the album charts with 2 singles in the Top 10, but Katy only has her single–showing the importance of the artist’s entire package, not just a hit single.

These figures come with the additional news that album sales fell an (unsurprising) 12.8% from 373.9 million units to 326.2 million, but digital album sales grew 13% from 76.4 million to 86.3 million units.

In singles news, the market grew 1% from 1.17 billion units from 2009’s 1.16 billion.

Top Selling Albums of 2010:

1. “Recovery” Eminem (3.42 million)
2. “Need You Now” Lady Antebellum (3.09 million)
3. “Speak Now” Taylor Swift (2.96 million)
4. “My World 2.0” Justin Bieber (2.32 million)
5. “The Gift” Susan Boyle (1.85 million)
6. “The Fame” Lady GaGa (1.59 mllion)
7. “Soldier of Love” Sade (1.30 million)
8. “Thank Me Later” Drake (1.27 million)
9. “Raymond V. Raymond” Usher (1.18 million)
10. “Animal” Ke$ha (1.14 million)

Top Selling Singles of 2010:

1. “California Gurls” Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg (4.40 million)
2. “Hey Soul Sister” Train (4.31 million)
3. “Love The Way You Lie” Eminem featuring Rihanna (4.25 million)
4. “Dynamite” Taio Cruz (4.08 million)
5. “Airplanes” B.o.B. featuring Haley Williams (4.00 millions)
6. “OMG” Usher featuring will.i.am (3.76 million)
7. “Not Afriad” Eminem (3.41 million)
8. “Just The Way You Are” Bruno Mars (3.28 million)
9. “Break Your Heart” Taio Cruz featuring Ludacris (3.25 million)
10. “Need You Now” Lady Antebellum (3.18 million)

It truly is fascinating to see which artists appear on which lists. When I look at the top albums lists, I see artists that immediately have an entire persona, look, and sound that comes to mind. This makes people not only want to get your singles initially, but then the album too when it comes out. Yet when I look at the singles chart, there are people who I really have no connection with at all. I still have no idea what B.o.B. or Taio Cruz look like, but I think artists like Bruno Mars and Katy will find their album sales getting larger in time since they are working towards establishing themselves as artists rather than going for the hit single. Do you think these charts reveal anything interesting?
