2011 has officially kicked off! Avril Lavigne is one of 2011’s most anticipated releases, and made her return to the worldwide stage by kicking off the year right with the premiere performance of her new single “What The Hell.”
The new single, which is up-beat in a similar vein to the 2007 chart-topping (but not particularly deep) “Girlfriend,” has been labeled by Avril as not being a true representation of the album. In fact, her description of the song in past interviews and messages gives off the impression that the song was forced on her by the label to have a commercial hit.
Avril’s new album, Goodbye Lullaby, has finally been given a release date of the month of March. This has come with struggles between Avril and her label (the notoriously old-school RCA), but apparently an agreement has been met–despite the little jabs Avril keeps making (those will be reported when they come).
Regardless, Avril premiered the rocky number at Dick Clark’s Rockin New Year amongst strong vocals and a lot of jumping. The punk princess looked somewhat disconnected during the performance, which be an indication of how she feels about the song, or maybe that’s just her usual performance style–I wouldn’t know yet. Avril fans speak up if you know!
This was a good performance to kick off the promotion for Goodbye Lullaby and time will only tell how the success of “What The Hell” and Avril’s upcoming 4th album will turn out to be. I’m hoping for the best, the other material besides “What The Hell” sounds promising! In the meantime, check out Avril’s performance and under the cut look at Avril’s other performance of the night of “Girlfriend” where she interacts with the crowd more.
What did you think of the first performance of “What The Hell”? Does Avril seem bored with her new single or is this just how she performs?
