Bruno Mars has gained his 2nd #1 solo single with “Grenade” by flip-flopping the #2 place with “Firework” by Katy Perry which ended its three-week run at the top spot.

The soulful mid-tempo marks Bruno’s third number one single overall (he was featured on B.o.B’s “Nothing On You” which hit #1 earlier in 2010) and will hopefully add some fuel to his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, which jumped back into the Top 20 on the Billboard 200 from 29 t0 20.

Bruno had one of the best combinations for a debut artist’s album release. I don’t know if you guys feel the same way, but I actually didn’t believe this was only Bruno’s 2nd single, I felt like he’d been releasing music for much longer! The fact remains that he was featured on the #1 “Nothin’ On You” and then had another Top 5 single being featured on Travie McCoy‘s “Billionaire” months before his solo material. When the first single “Just The Way You Are” hit #1 for four weeks (which also knocked off Katy Perry from the top) and a high-profile SNL performance all during his album release week, it almost seems a bit underwhelming that the album debuted at #3 with 55,000 copies and hasn’t risen back much since.

I think the ultimate problem that came with a new artist like Bruno Mars is that there isn’t an artistic identification with him. I think it’s starting to become more developed with this single and then his impressive performances (like the one at The Soul Train Awards posted after the jump). But when you have such generic songs like “Just The Way You Are” (despite how cute it is!) people aren’t going to be checking for a full album, but instead they’d rather pay the $1.29 for your single. Lady GaGa was a similar artist to Bruno in the sense that her music was being played all over the radio with similar success (first 2 singles went to #1 as well) but EVERYONE knew what the artist Lady GaGa was, looked like, and was completely intrigued by it. That’s why The Fame ended up surpassing its #17 debut position up to #4, and stayed in the Top 10 for weeks. “Grenade” shows a deeper artist in Mars, and hopefully his talent continues to be recognized.

Check out the ARTIST Bruno Mars with a performance of the last #1 song of 2010 at The Soul Train Awards earlier this year where you can get a clear picture of Bruno Mars’ look & impressive guitar playing.
